Options for trainer developmentAs explained in Train the Trainer, a variety of different development options currently exist for team leaders, managers and trainers. The new Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is one choice. Where formal training qualifications are required, the certificate is normally the best option, see: Cert 1V in Training and Assessment. For some, the certificate may exceed their requirements. Training may be a part of their normal work, but their skill requirement might be quite specific. For example, the training conducted may consist solely of one-on-one or on-the-job (OTJ) training. Group training techniques, although interesting, may be not applicable. A specific, short train the trainer program can meet this specific training need. Questions to consider are:
Derek Stockley provides a wide range of options. An example of the content of a train-the-trainer program is explained at: Trainer Training Course Design. Derek Stockley conducts a: Train the Trainer Public Course in Sydney and Melbourne. Others may have attained the certificate, but wish to enhance or further develop their understanding of training techniques or methods. An advanced train the trainer program would meet this skill requirement. An example of this kind of program is: Advanced Train the Trainer. Communication, public speaking and presentation skills can be a related or different training need. See: general training courses or Presentation Skills Training. Facilitation Skills Training is another variation. |

Practical or theory based trainingNeeds can be skill or theory related. Some may wish to develop practical skills. They might want help in designing and/or presenting training sessions. They may wish to receive feedback from peers and trainers on their training style, speaking skills, use of aids, general facilitation skills and the like. They may be looking for ideas and specific tips and techniques that will improve the quality and effectiveness of their training. Others may have the practical training skills. Their need is to increase their exposure to the theory behind training. They may wish to explore training needs analysis methods, blended learning, e-learning, simulation development and other specific topics. A variety of approaches can be used to design training that meets the diversity of training needs described above. Firstly, a variety of methods can be used. Options include "class room" training and elearning/online training methods, or a combination, which is called blended learning. Course lengths can vary. The training can be intensive or spread over a period of time. |
