This page attempts to give you an understanding of Derek Stockley. When dealing with and using the services of a learning and performance consultant, you sometimes need to know more than the background and experience information. To be confident in the partnership, you also need to get know to know the person - his approach, how he thinks, how he will act - whether or not his beliefs are similar to your own.

If you are interested in organising a training program, or you require consulting assistance, see: Contact Details.

The following is written as I would speak to you personally. I apologise for the overuse of "I" - it is something that I would normally try to avoid.

Please note: some links will open a new window - this allows you to explore without excessive use of the 'back button' to return to this page - just close the window when you are finished.

For any assignment, I bring knowledge and skills drawn from over 25 years of employment and consulting experience as well as extensive life experience.

I am committed to both formal and informal learning and education. I have practiced life long learning all of my adult life. I have a degree in business and a post graduate diploma in organisation behaviour. I have regularly updated my training qualifications.

Consequently I can conduct a wide variety of training and consulting assignments.

As a technical writer, I have developed post graduate course materials. I have written a variety of training and management resources. I am regularly asked to contribute to HR, learning and management magazines, the two latest being:

  • Implementing e-learning - an "how to" guide by Derek Stockley - important tips and information about the successful implementation of e-learning systems in companies and organisations. This article was originally in EI Magazine (EI, Volume 2 Issue 7, February 2006, Ark Group Ltd). You can read it in PDF format (as published) here.

  • Informal learning - important tips and information about informal learning, originally written for Capital Magazine.

On this website are copies of the published articles. In addition, I publish a regular newsletter called High Performance. The title reflects my business and personal objectives and the underlying approach to my business. All of my activities with clients revolve around increased personal and organisational performance.

I also:

  • have extensive experience in Performance Management, Training Needs Analysis and Train the Trainer.

  • am suitable for specific and/or "big picture" assignments, moving between the two easily. I am committed to continuous improvement and quality principles.

  • aspire to high ethical standards and always aim for the highest possible levels of service. I maintain strict client privacy and client confidentiality policies.

  • have worked with people from the public, private, education and community sectors, as broadly described here.

  • have worked with employees, staff, team leaders, managers, executives, union officials, consultants, contractors and the like. Typical reactions are described here.

  • have experience with both Macintosh and Windows computer systems, and I have contributed to the development and implementation of a variety of information technology systems. I have developed and run a successful website which achieves high rankings in search engines.

  • assist organisations by demonstrating effective management skills, often achieving a transfer of skills to the staff I am working with.

As some of the above links show, my High Performance newsletter often gives an insight into my thoughts and current thinking. Many newsletters are straightforward, providing information about a wide variety of topics. Some are quite personal.

This selection provides examples of the more personal newsletters. They provide insight into how I think and operate:

The two main requirements for success as a trainer - if you want to be a successful trainer, this article highlights two important requirements.

The importance of employee engagement - this article highlights the steps necessary to achieve employee engagement.

The customer can be closer than you think - a key point about relationships with customers - they can be closer than you think.

Personal success - the impact people have on others - Derek Stockley details three conversations that highlight a concept of personal success

Achieving the work-life balance - it is more than good time management - explores the problems associated with balancing work and family commitments.

The importance of striving for continuous improvement and innovation - explores the importance of innovation and continuous improvement. Specific personal examples provide a basis for the development of principles, with customer service in organisations being highlighted.

Exploring values and beliefs - underlying operating principles - the importance of values and beliefs is explored.

The impact of training on others - training evaluation over the long term - as an example of long-term training evaluation, Derek Stockley comments on recent personal experiences about his own trainer development and the impact of training on others.

What's in a name? Choosing a marketing/business name - getting the label right the first time.
