Internet Service Provider and Web Hosting Issues

Choosing Service Providers and Hosting Services

Most people can skip this article. It only applies if you have not as yet settled on an internet service provider. Alternatively, you may be unhappy with your current provider and are therefore considering a change.

Your service provider, which provides access to the internet and an email address, may be different to your hosting service for your web site.

Given that the number of service providers is decreasing, most authorities recommend a large, well known provider e.g. Ozemail, Big Pond, Primus, etc. Even large providers can have difficulties. There is ongoing rationalisation in the industry as many smaller providers cannot compete.

The company that actually "hosts" your web site may be different to your service provider. For example, some people who have found this page, may choose a free hosting service which is different to the service they use to surf the web.

When considering a web host, it is also important to consider website statistics and web traffic monitoring software.

I found the following web sites relevant and helpful:

For general advice on web hosting, see: Choosing a Web Host. (This opens a new window. Please close it to return to this point.)

For specific advice, see: Checklist - Web Host. (This opens a new window. Please close it to return to this point.)

If Search Engine Optimization is important to you, please review Website Traffic Analysis Statistics. It explains the key features of programs that track site traffic. Choosing a host provider that includes excellent traffic monitoring may save the cost of purchasing an additional service.
