Books about HTML (XHTML) and CSS tend to complement each other; that is, you cannot really have one without the other, as they are all interrelated.

An easy to understand guide to HTML and XHTML, and why you should be using the later. Good coverage of CSS and a basic introduction to JavaScript. A good feature is that Elizabeth Castro provides opinions about which approaches to use and why.
